There are times in our lives, I feel it’s safe to say, that we all can feel “stuck”. Typically, we’ll then hear the sage advice that we should “create the live you want”.

It sounds enlightening; definitely the kind of thing I’d expect to read from a fortune cookie. But how exactly do we create the life that life we want? What does that even mean for us?

The world is a canvas of possibilities, yet, this expanse can be overwhelming without a sense of direction. So, we need to do some investigating.

Self-discovery is the compass that guides us through this vastness, helping us understand who we are beyond academic achievements and societal expectations. It’s a continuous journey that evolves as we grow and change. And most importantly, it helps us do three things:

  • Understand our passions - Our passions are those things that energize us; those activities that we lose hours in without noticing the passage of time. Figuring these out is crucial because they can often lead to fulfilling careers, hobbies, or activities. They let us try new things and investigate what sparks joy and interest in us

  • Recognize our strengths - Listen, it's important to work on our weaknesses, we become better, well rounded individuals . But recognizing and playing to our strengths can lead to greater success and satisfaction.

  • Clarify our values - Values are the principles that guide our decisions and actions, and understanding them helps in making choices that align with with our truest selves.

Embarking on the journey of creating the life we want is often met with a formidable duo: fear and uncertainty. These emotions are natural responses to the unknown, but navigating through these feelings is crucial in the pursuit of a fulfilling life.

I won’t lie, this can be THE hardest thing to get past. When you finally have an idea of the kind of life you want to life, you’ll almost immediately get assailed by all the “what ifs” and reasons these things can’t be.

Fear of failure and fear of the unknown stop you from taking action.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and for years, I let thoughts like “you don’t know enough big words” or “you’re not that good of a writer” stop me from simply starting. But you know what else I’ve learned? Simply taking action and doing the thing I loved helped me to grow. It built resilience. It forced me to set goals, increase my education, and persist. I am by no means the world’s best writer, but I can guarantee you I’m a better writer now that when I started, and that’s the biggest lesson.

The life you want requires commitment and action.

You have to have a vision, this is where self discovery comes in, then set goals. What do you want to accomplish? Where do you want to travel to? What language do you want to learn? The the time to reflect, and then you need to go out and do. There’s no way around it.

LESSON: To create the life you want; take action.
